Tattoo Aftercare

During the tattooing process, the skin is broken, creating a wound. If you take proper care of the tattoo, it takes about six weeks for this wound to heal.

If the tattoo has been covered with a sterile compress or plastic wrap, you can remove it after 3 to 5 hours. You are allowed to shower with the tattoo. Second Skin can stay on for 3 days. More information about Second Skin can be found further down.

Treat the uncovered tattoo wound as follows:

• Wash the tattoo twice a day, once with lukewarm water and once with an unscented, antibacterial soap or natural soap. An example with minimal fragrance is Unicura Balance.
• Pat the tattoo dry after washing it with a clean towel.
• Apply a thin layer of Bepanthen baby ointment to the wound approximately 3 times a day.

Follow the steps below to ensure a smooth healing process:

• Avoid touching the tattoo wound as much as possible (always wash your hands with antibacterial soap before caring for the wound).
• After about 4 days, flakes may start to come off the tattoo and it may begin to itch. Do not scratch the tattoo wound!
• Do not cover the tattoo wound with tight or dirty clothing.
• Do not cover the tattoo wound with plasters or bandages.
• Avoid (bubble) baths, swimming pools, saunas, and steam baths (for at least two weeks).
• Do not expose the tattoo wound to direct sunlight or tanning beds.

The tattooed skin remains very sensitive to sunlight even after the tattoo is completed. Always apply sunscreen with a high SPF to your tattoo.

Note: Contact your doctor if you experience severe redness, swelling, bleeding, wound fluid, color changes, or chronic pain.

Second Skin

In our studio, we often use Second Skin to cover the tattoo after it is done. Read more below.
Second Skin tattoo stickers are thin, flexible, adhesive films designed to cover and protect a new tattoo. They act as a protective layer, mimicking the natural properties of the skin. These stickers are typically made from medical-grade materials that allow the skin to breathe while keeping out dirt, bacteria, and other contaminants. Second Skin is applied by the artist after the tattoo is completed. It can stay on for up to 3 days. Second Skin does not protect against the sun, and it is not suitable for swimming or going to the sauna.

After removing it, you should begin the aftercare procedure. The easiest way to remove Second Skin is in the shower, gently pulling it away from the tattoo.
